BIO:
Sean Cox is an award-winning actor, director, and educator with over 30 years of professional theatre experience. He is the founding Artistic Director of The Grove Theatre in Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, and Intrepid Theatre Company in San Diego, California.
Since founding The Grove Theatre in 2022, Sean has directed The 39 Steps, Into the Woods, The Comedy of Errors, Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, and Same Time, Next Year, and as King Arthur in Monty Python’s Spamalot. The Grove is the first professional theatre in Fenelon Falls and has quickly established itself as a cultural hub through its vibrant, festival-style programming.
A lifelong champion of Shakespeare, Sean has directed critically acclaimed productions of King John, The Winter’s Tale, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Twelfth Night. His award-winning performances include iconic roles such as Hamlet, Macbeth, Richard II, Oberon, Benedick, Leontes, Mercutio, Puck, Malvolio, and Philip the Bastard. He has worked with numerous theatres and festivals, including the Idaho, Texas, and Nevada Shakespeare Festivals, The Old Globe, La Jolla Playhouse, Los Angeles Repertory Theatre, and PCPA Theatrefest, and has collaborated with renowned theatre artists including Bartlett Sher, Roger Rees, Tom Stoppard, James Edmondson, Marion Ross, and Jonathan McMurtry.
After founding Intrepid Theatre Company in 2009, Sean led the company to become one of San Diego’s most respected theatres. Among its many honors, Intrepid received the San Diego Critics Circle Award for Best Dramatic Production three consecutive years—an unprecedented achievement—for All My Sons, The Quality of Life, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. Additional award-winning productions include Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, An Enemy of the People, and Father Comes Home from the Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3). Sean also served as Director and Co-Creator of Shakespeare for a New Generation, an acclaimed school tour program that has brought live Shakespeare performances and interactive workshops to more than 100,000 students across Southern California.
Sean is an Associate Artist with North Coast Repertory Theatre, Cygnet Theatre, and Lamb’s Players Theatre, and has collaborated with Sierra Repertory Theatre, Moxie Theatre, and San Diego Repertory Theatre. Selected stage credits include John Proctor (The Crucible), Tom Wingfield (The Glass Menagerie), Edmund Tyrone (Long Day’s Journey Into Night), the Man (The Turn of the Screw), Housman (The Invention of Love), Walker/Ned (Three Days of Rain), and the title role in The Elephant Man. Sean toured the solo play The Thousandth Night throughout North America, earning critical acclaim for his award-winning performance portraying more than 40 characters.
Television and film credits include ER, 24, CSI: Miami, Hello Lonesome, Nancy Meyers’ The Holiday, and Emilio Estevez’s Bobby, appearing alongside Anthony Hopkins and Martin Sheen.
Sean is a graduate of the Pacific Conservatory of Performing Arts, with additional training at Shakespeare’s Globe in London and The Old Globe in Southern California.
